Here's the uncomfortable math behind the wall: your muscles store roughly 90 to 120 minutes' worth of glycogen at race effort. A marathon takes most people well past that. So unless you're actively replacing fuel and managing effort from the start, running out isn't a failure of willpower — it's just physics. That's why over 40% of marathoners report hitting the wall around mile 20, right when glycogen stores are running dry.

The fix has two parts. First, fueling: start taking in carbs within the first 30 to 45 minutes of the race, not when you first feel hungry or tired. By then you're already behind. Aim for 30 to 60 grams of carbs per hour, split into small, frequent doses (gels, chews, sports drink — whatever you've trained with) rather than one big hit. Second, pacing: run the opening miles 10 to 15 seconds per mile slower than goal pace. Going out even slightly too hot burns through glycogen faster and pulls your wall earlier into the race.

The part people skip: rehearsing this. Your gut has to learn to absorb carbs while running, and that's a trainable skill, not something you figure out on race day. Practice your exact fueling plan — same products, same timing, same amounts — on your long runs. If a new gel or drink mix upsets your stomach, you want to find that out on a Saturday morning training run, not at mile 16 of your goal race.

Think of it less as "toughing it out" and more as inventory management. You've got a limited glycogen tank and a long day ahead — the goal is to stretch it as far as possible with smart pacing, then keep topping it off before it runs empty.
